The Ukrainian Museum, New York softcover, 36 pages, Ukrainian embroidery (Ukrainian: вишивка, vyshyvka) occupies an important place among the various branches of Ukrainian decorative arts. Embroidery has a rich history in Ukraine, and has long appeared in Ukrainian folk dress as well as played a part in traditional Ukrainian weddings and other celebrations.

Appearing all across the country, Ukrainian embroidery varies depending on the. Russian Textiles showcases the striking printed-cotton textiles designed and manufactured in Russia specifically for export to Central Asia (formerly known as Turkestan, and now comprised of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan).

More than full-color photographs spanning a variety of periods and styles from Art Nouveau florals to Soviet-era agitprop are featured. I was interested to learn that, when we see Ukrainian cross stitch designs today, they aren’t the real tradition of Ukrainian embroidery.

Cross stitch didn’t figure into Traditional designs in Ukrainian textiles book embroidery until after the ’s, and it was essentially adopted from the French.

The convent rushnyky are more typical of traditional Ukrainian techniques. Trade textiles blended the traditional designs, skills, and tastes of their cultures of origin, with new techniques learned through global exchange, creating beautiful new works that are also historically fascinating.
